We recently had a customer contact us about using essential oils for mold removal. This time of year, many of us are suffering from cold/flu-like symptoms, but it isn’t ALWAYS a cold/flu. Oftentimes these symptoms come about as a result of mold in your house. To get rid of mold, many people use a bleach mix, but if you’re looking for a healthier alternative to bleach, why not try essential oils.
Research has found that essential oils can have a lasting effect on mold. Lemongrass has proven to fight against Aspergillus flavus, a common bacteria found in the body from mold. Furthermore, oil mixtures have been effective in killing off a wider variety of mold compounds. Below is a basic mixture that will fight a variety of molds. As always, be careful when working directly with essential oils, and consult a physician if you are pregnant.
2-3 Drops Cinnamon Essential Oil
2-3 Drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil
2-3 Drops Clove Essential Oil
2-3 Drops Tea Tree Oil
2 Tablespoons Distilled White Vinegar (optional)
Using a pipette dropper, mix oils together. Put into a spray bottle. Apply directly to molded surfaces. Wipe dry. The scent will be quite strong, so you can use a surgical mask if you are sensitive to the fragrance. The recipe can be altered depending on how large a surface you are treating. You can also use other oils if you know the specific type of mold you are working with. You will find various recipes online to treat the specific mold you have.
