Recipe: Homemade Tanning Lotion, Oil & Sunless Product!

Alright, alright…before you get mad at us for posting recipes for tanning products, please note we do offer a sunless tanner lotion for those that prefer to stay out of the harmful UV rays! For those that are going to visit their favorite salons for a winter glow, we also have some recipes for tanning lotion and oil for the beds. As always, these recipes can be altered if you prefer different oils, OR if you want to add a scent to the product you can always incorporate an essential/fragrance oil into the mix. These are basic base recipes that also utilize our ready-made bases. In case you haven’t tried one of our ready-made lotion bases, we have a basic and a premium version available. The premium version is paraben-free and they both come unscented! Enjoy!

Tanning Lotion:

Blend 2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil, 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil, 1/2 cup Lanolin, and 4-5 drops of your desired essential oil. Mix thoroughly. Apply to the skin before you go out in the sun/into the tanning bed.

Tanning Oil:

Tanning oil is much thinner than the lotion, so a little bit goes a long way. The recipe calls for iodine, which is going to give you a much darker tone that you would without. We understand not everyone is comfortable putting this product on their skin, but it is a common ingredient in many tanning oils. If you prefer not to use it, simply leave it out. Otherwise, mix 1/4 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup baby oil and 1/2 teaspoon of iodine until it is all blended. Use in a spray bottle and immediately wash your hands after applying evenly to your body (otherwise you will end up with those orange hands!)

Sunless Tanning Lotion:

Mix 1/3 cup cocoa butter with 1/2 cup lotion base. This will, over time, give your skin a darker tone without the orange undertones. It is mild though, so it will not work as quickly as direct contact with a tanning bed or sun rays.

Please tan safely and if you have fair or sensitive skin, we recommend staying out of the sun completely and using a product that has UV protection!
