We are so excited to showcase you this month. Can you tell the maker community who you are?
Hello, my name is Michelle Kim. I have been creating candles for the past four and a half years. For the last 25 years, I have worked as a full-time graphic designer for a missionary publishing company. I have been married for 26 years and have two children. Currently, I am focusing on teaching online classes for candle enthusiasts from all over the world and occasionally participating in craft/vendor shows to connect with other artists and candle lovers.
As a creator and educator, where did your journey begin and grow to what it is today?
I’ve been a graphic designer in the US for a long time, but I’ve always had a strong interest in hands-on arts and crafts. When I came across macaron candles and a cake candle made by a candle artist in Korea, I decided to order them for a photo shoot prop. This led me to discover various dessert candles and unique creations that are very popular in South Korea. I made the decision to travel to Korea, where I booked a one-month stay and signed up for intensive in-person classes. I took four different courses taught by three different teachers. After returning to the US, Covid broke out, and I began selling candles on Etsy. Despite enjoying my time in retail, I quickly discovered that teaching online classes resonates more with my passion. I am committed to creating original designs and techniques to inspire my students and fellow candle makers. I also try to attend local and national craft shows whenever possible, as this allows me to engage with consumers and connect with other artists. I recently participated in an event in Brooklyn, NY, and I am excited to share my experiences during my upcoming class.
What do you love most about creating products and educating others who want to create?
What is your favorite product you have created?
It would be a vintage/retro cake candle, perhaps a two-tiered one. I love the visual appeal and the wide range of designs achievable with this fantastic recipe.
What is your favorite part of teaching others?
I love to see their passion and achievement. Often, I receive an email with feedback, including what they created after the class, and that means the world to me. It’s amazing to be a part of their journey and see how they grow in business.
What is one piece of advice that has helped you in your business?
Let’s discover your unique style so that others can easily recognize your work. You don’t have to cater to everyone; just find your niche.
Do you have any online classes or products you want to tell our community about?
