- The Classic DIY Shaving Cream Recipe
For this classic DIY shaving cream, you’ll need the following:
- 2/3 cup shea nut oil or shea butter
- 2/3 cup coconut oil
- 1/4 cup olive oil or grapeseed oil
- 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oils/oil blend
- 2 tablespoons of baking soda
Directions:
- Melt the shea nut oil together with 2/3 cup of coconut oil. Stir in 1/4 cup of olive oil or grapeseed oil.
- When the mixture is fully melted, add in 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil.
- Pour the mixture into a container. Do a final, good stir and set the mixture into the fridge to harden. Once it’s hardened, remove it from the fridge to soften a little.
- Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to the softened mixture using a mixer. Mix until the mixture is light and fluffy.
- Apply the mixture liberally to where you want to shave. After use, store in a cool, dark place.
- Tropical Coconut Oil Shaving Cream
For this coconut oil shaving cream, you’ll need the following:
- 1/4 cup aloe vera
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 4-6 drops essential oil, such as peppermint, and lavender.
Directions:
- Combine all the ingredients. You’ll have to melt the coconut oil first before you mix it with the other ingredients.
- Store the mixture in a plastic container.
- Apply a thin layer to your skin and allow it to sit for a couple minutes before shaving.
- If the coconut oil hardens or separates between uses, put the container under the shower stream before shaving to warm it up.

Do any of these recipes leave the foaming cream on skin? Or will it instantly absorb into the skin?
They will be absorbed into the skin.
I am trying to figure out a recipe for a small business class, and i’m wondering – why would we add baking soda? Just wondering what that does for it.
Baking soda helps remove the oils from the skin and facial hair; this allows razor blades be more efficient at cutting the hair, possibly causing them to last longer. Also, baking soda could possibly decrease irritation and minimize oily skin caused by other shaving solutions.
What can I substitute for the coconut oil. I have a few people allergic to it.
I tried the classic recipe twice and it just melted on the skin, there was no foam. What could be the problem?
I apologize, these are not foaming shaving creams; the chemicals needs to create the foaming effect are not present in these all natural recipes.
Hi, I tried the lightweight homemade shaving gel. The recipe says to just blend the ingredients. Do you mean with a blender? Or just a spoon. It’s very watery. What can I do to adjust it? I adjusted the recipe to make 4 containers. Thanks.
What butter can I sub for shea? I currently have cocoa butter on hand. Thanks
On the tropical shaving cream it just says Aloe Vera…are you talking about the gel, liquid, or powder?
Thanks
The powder would be best to mix in with the oil.
Does this have to always be stored in the refrigerator even if I use a preservative?
Hi Lauren,
Nope, you don’t have to refrigerate this product, preservatives or not. It can just be kept in a jar/tin in the shower or in your bathroom.
