Cold Process Soap Making
Cold process is the traditional method of soap making. an art that allows artisans to exercise full creative control. This method creates beautiful results with more options for additives and design, but requires the most patients, supplies, and space to create the soaps. The cure time is longer with cold process soap making so you need to plan ahead if making and selling with this soap making method.
The name cold process is because other than melting the solids, the soap is made at room temperature and the “heating” is done with Lye in process called Saponification. This is a chemical reaction provoked by mixing a fat (oils, butters, etc) with a strong base, sodium hydroxide lye. This reaction creates two elements: glycerin and soap! The process takes about 48 hours and then cures for about 4 weeks.
Getting Started with Cold Process:

A Blend of Oils of your choice for example, coconut oil, sunflower oil, or jojoba oil

Ultra Shea Butter Oatmeal Soap Bar:
Ingredients:
- 1.5 lb Oatmeal Melt and Pour Soap Base
- 1-2 teaspoons Vitamin E Oil
- 10-15 drops Ultra Shea Butter Fragrance Oil
Tools:
- Double Boiler or microwave safe container
- Soap Molds
- Soap Cutter
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Soap Base
Cut the Oatmeal Melt and Pour Soap Base into small cubes for easy melting. Using a double boiler or microwave, melt the soap base until smooth.
Step 2: Add Vitamin E Oil, and Fragrance
Add 1-2 teaspoons of Vitamin E Oil for added nourishment. Add 10-15 drops of Ultra Shea Butter Fragrance Oil for a rich, luxurious scent. Adjust the quantity based on your preference.
Step 3: Mix and Pour
Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure even distribution of Vitamin E oil, and fragrance. Pour the melted soap mixture into soap molds of your choice.
Step 4: Set and Cool
Allow the soap to cool and harden at room temperature or speed up the process by placing it in the refrigerator.
Step 5: Unmold and Cut
Once fully hardened, carefully remove the soap from the molds.
