10 DIY Lotion Recipes– When it comes to easy crafts you can make for yourself, a lotion is a fun one that you can do quickly and easily. There is no special equipment that you need to get for these recipes. Another thing you don’t need to worry about is scouring the internet for hours, looking for hard to find ingredients. Here are ten great recipes you can try:
1. Rose Water Lotion
- A great lotion you can make yourself with basic ingredients.
- 1 cup rose water at room temperature (this makes emulsifying easier)
- 2 tbsps. coconut oil
- 1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
- 2 1/2 Tablespoons grated beeswax
- Essential oils of your choice
- Glass jar and lid for storage
Directions:
- Grate the beeswax with a grater that you don’t mind ruining. While you can still use it again after grating beeswax, your grater will never be the same. You might consider buying a cheap one to keep on hand for this very reason.
- Heat water in a pan on the stove until simmering, while you measure out the extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil into a glass jar. Add the beeswax and then place the glass jar into the simmering water. Stir it often with a popsicle stick until the wax is dissolved. This has to be done low and slow, so do not turn the heat up too high (don’t microwave either). Let it cool for a few minutes and then add as much essential oil as you would like for your level of scent. Usually, it is between 10 and 20 drops of each oil (if you are mixing flavors).
- The last step is to emulsify this into nice blended cream. Place your rose water into a blender and turn it on, remembering to have the lid on. Through the opening in the lid (generally a circle in the center of the lid), slowly add your oil and wax mixture. Starting out you might want to add only a few drops at a time, but just be sure that you are not going too fast for the incorporation of the ingredients to take to each other. You can pour more once the mixture starts seizing and turning whiter in color. Keep blending until you don’t see any more of the water mixture and everything looks incorporated. Transfer it to an air-tight container with a lid for storage.
2. Homemade Whipped Body Butter – Rich, creamy lotion that looks as glorious as it feels on your skin.
- 1 cup each of:
- cocoa butter
- coconut oil
- jojoba, almond, or olive oil
Directions:
- Gently melt the cocoa butter and coconut oil in a pan using a double boiler until totally liquid. Stir in the oil you have chosen. Place the mixture in the refrigerator for at least a few hours until it begins to firm up, but does not get completely solid.
- After it is firm, use a mixer to whip it until white peaks form. Store it in air-tight glass jars for at least an hour. Store here unless your home is above moderate temperatures or humidity. If it does melt, you can always re-chill and re-whip it.
3. Peppermint Whipped Body Butter
- 1 cup each of
- coconut oil
- cocoa butter
- shea butter
- sweet almond oil
- 1 tsp vitamin E oil
- 5-10 drops peppermint essential oils
Directions:
- Mix coconut oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter over low heat in a medium pot until it is melted completely. Remove from the heat and completely mix in sweet almond, vitamin E, and peppermint oils.
- Chill for two hours in the refrigerator, or until the mixture is firm, but not too hard. Use a mixer to whip into the right consistency with stiff peaks, and store in an air-tight container. This will last at room temperature for six to twelve months.
4. Major Skin Repair Cream
- 16 oz baby lotion
- 8 oz Vaseline
- 8 oz Vitamin E Cream
Directions:
- All this recipe requires is mixing these three ingredients together until they resemble icing. Then store them in air-tight containers of your choice.
5. Eczema Cream
- 1 cup of oats
- 1 cup of coconut oil
- About 1 full tablespoon of olive oil
- Few drops of rosemary oil (optional)*
Directions:
- Grind or blend the oats until they are the consistency of flour and set aside. In a medium pan, melt the coconut oil over low heat until it is a liquid. If adding rosemary oil, add it now as well as the ground oats and olive oil, mixing well between each ingredient.
- Remove the mixture from the heat and pour it into a small storage container and allow it to harden for several hours.
- *Rosemary oil is great for helping to remove dryness and toning your skin in the process. However, if you do not like the smell or have found you are sensitive to it, you can leave it out.
6. Shimmer Body Lotion
- Your favorite lotion
- Shimmer Powder or Eye Shadow
- A Bottle for Storage
Directions:
- In a small jar, simply add the amount of lotion you desire. Add in the shimmer powder or eye shadow a little at a time until your desired amount of shine is achieved.
- This lotion is great for a day out or just to give your skin a healthy glow for special events. When picking an eye shadow to use, try to stick to the golden or bronze ones rather than silver tones. These will enhance the skin’s natural tones better.
7. Anti-Wrinkle Cream
- 1 cup avocado oil, apricot kernel oil, or sesame oil (you can also use a combination of these if you want)
- 1 cup aloe vera gel
Directions:
- Shake these ingredients together in a closed glass jar. To apply, simply dab some on your fingertips and massage it into the skin around your eyes.
8. Organic Facial Moisturizer
- 4 Tablespoons Pure Aloe Vera
- 1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin
- 6 drops Jojoba Oil
- 1 teaspoon sweet almond oil
Directions:
- Get a container that you plan on storing the mixture in and a funnel if you think you will need it. Add all the ingredients and shake to combine. This will be watery, so the application is best done with a cotton pad or clean fingertips. Allow the moisturizer to air dry and you will be left with soft, silky skin.
9. DIY Facial/Body Lotion with Sunscreen
- 16 oz baby lotion
- 8 oz Vaseline
- 8 oz Vitamin E Cream
- A few sprays of sunscreen
- Essential Oils for smell if desired
Directions:
- Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl with an electric mixer. Store in air-tight containers.
10. Easy Beeswax Lotion
- 1 cup each of:
- olive oil
- coconut oil
- beeswax pastilles (or 2 oz solid beeswax grated)
- 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
- 20 drops essential oil scent of your choice
Directions:
- Combine olive oil, coconut oil, and beeswax into a pint-sized canning jar. Place the jar in a saucepan with enough water to come up to the top of the jar and place over medium/low heat. Stir occasionally until the mixture is all melted.
- Cool to room temperature either on the counter or in the refrigerator. While it cools, mix with a fork vigorously every 15 minutes. Add the Vitamin E and essential oil once it reaches room temperature.
