Who needs products packed full of chemicals and irritants when Mother Nature gave us exactly what we need to maintain healthy, clean lives. Need some factual information to get on board with natural, homemade products?
Here you go- The Environmental Protection Agency cites artificial fragrances in cleaning products as indoor irritants and pollutants. Pollutants!! Just by putting the word “fragrance” on the label, manufacturers can add as many as 600 petrochemicals to the mix. WHAT?!?! Did you ever think you were polluting your own home just by cleaning up? There are so many natural products that make amazing home cleaning solutions- it’s crazy to think about store bought items.
Did you know that baking soda and vinegar are cleaning powerhouses?! They fight dirt and grime like a boss. And they’re in your kitchen pantry right now. See? No need to buy that chemically based brand on the shelf at the grocery store. Grandma had it right using those “old fashion” remedies (as most grandmas do). Pairing natural cleaning products with essential oils only enhances their cleaning properties and leaves our home smelling fresh and clean.
Name brand products contain citrus oils such as lemon or lime for a reason – they are natural degreasers and have antimicrobial properties. Put a few together and you have a homemade cleaning product that will leave dirt and bacteria running for the door. This next recipe is AMAZING for several reasons:
1. They are REUSABLE
2. They’re RECYCLED
3. They’re completely CHEMICAL-FREE.
You’ll Need:
– One old t-shirt
– Liquid Castile Soap
– Peppermint Essential Oil
– Large lidded Apothecary Jar or Mason Jar
Here’s What You’ll Do:
1. Cut the old t-shirt into rag sized squares
2. Pour 1 cup of warm water, 1/8 cup liquid castile soap, and 10 drops peppermint essential oil into the jar (make sure to use one with a lid!)
3. Place the fabric squares in the jar, screw on the lid, and turn upside down several times until all the squares have been soaked with the cleaning solution.
4. Use for easy kitchen clean ups!
Tips and Tricks
After being used, the cloths can be washed and returned to the jar for easy use over and over again! Just add more of the cleaning mixture as needed.
Whenever you have a messy spill or just want to freshen up the counters, pull one out and enjoy knowing exactly what you’re using in your home!
